Chapter 4: From Subjectivity to Something That Will Have to Do
How private views become shared knowledge
Establish that we can never look inside each other's heads, so subjectivity is the only way anyone experiences the world, through the filters of senses, body, history and language. Show that seeing the world purely is impossible except mathematically, which leaves much out, and that objectivity takes extra, deliberate work. Motivate questioning ourselves and a measured self-doubt about our senses, then end on the conviction that self-awareness earns. This chapter also absorbs the former objectivity chapter: separating observation from story, and asking whose account gets heard.
