The MMM Loop
The recursive three-step growth loop — Measure and Map, Model and Manipulate, Manifest and Make — that runs at every scale from single-cell life to human civilisation.
Overview
MMM is the book’s central answer to the question: how do wanting, distinguishing creatures actually grow? The loop names three moves that always appear together in any instance of genuine learning or development: discriminating what pieces exist and charting the territory (Measure/Map), building a model of how those pieces connect and probing its behavior (Model/Manipulate), and synthesising something new from the discovered components and relationships (Manifest/Make). The loop then turns again from what the new thing reveals.
The three steps follow an ontological → relational → generative arc. First you establish what exists. Then you learn how it works. Then you bring something new into being from that knowledge. Each step has a distinct character and cannot substitute for the others: measuring is not modelling; modelling is not making.
The key argument is that this is not a heuristic borrowed from one field and applied to others as metaphor. It is the same underlying shape, running at different speeds and on different substrates. A bacterium running chemotaxis is running MMM at the molecular level. An organism with a nervous system compresses and accelerates the loop within a single lifetime. A human adds symbolic acceleration: language and culture allow measurements, models, and manifestations to be stored and reused across generations. A civilisation is recursive MMM loops stacked on top of biological ones.
Chapter 16 sharpens this into a stronger claim: MMM is the most meta process we can observe. The evidence is structural convergence across independent attempts to describe agency. A 2026 paper by Emmanuel Dupoux, Yann LeCun, and Jitendra Malik (“Why AI systems don’t learn and what to do about it: Lessons on autonomous learning from cognitive science”) proposes a three-system architecture for autonomous intelligence: System A (observation learning — a system that learns by watching), System B (active-behavior learning — a system that learns by doing), and System M (meta-control — a faculty that chooses between them). This is a structural echo of Measure / Model / Manifest, arriving from AI research rather than from the book’s own argument. The book does not claim the match is exact — it is structural, not detailed. The point is that when the three-layer shape keeps recurring across independent disciplines describing what agency requires, it is probably tracking something real. This is independent corroboration, not influence.
Growth, experienced from the inside, is the felt sense of this loop turning: better measurement, richer models, more effective manifestation. Suffering that has no acute physical cause is usually a stalled loop — one of the three moves has seized up.
Measure and Map (Chapter 13)
The ontological first step. Before you can understand a territory you must establish what pieces are in it — what exists, what qualities and dimensions are present, what varies and what stays the same. Measure is the act of becoming sensitive to difference; Map is the deliverable: a census of what is there before you know anything about how it works.
This distinction matters. Measuring is not modelling. The map is not yet a theory of causal relationships; it is a principled inventory of the territory. Every instrument carries a theory of what matters — there is no neutral measurement, only better or worse choices about what to attend to. But the choice to attend is still prior to the choice to explain.
Two costs are symmetrical: ignoring something leaves you subject to its surprises; measuring it starts shaping you toward it. Pick what you look at carefully. The map is the precondition for everything that follows.
Model and Manipulate (Chapter 14)
The relational/causal step. Once pieces have been mapped, the next move is to build a working account of how they connect and affect each other — and then to manipulate the model: run what-ifs, move pieces, probe behavior at the edge of its range. The manipulation is exploratory, not destructive. This is how you discover causal structure rather than mere correlation.
A model can live in a nervous system, in language, in code, in a building, in a ritual. The substrate does not change the function. But the manipulate phase is what converts a static hypothesis into a tool for understanding. You know you have a real model when you can move its parts and predict what changes.
Self-models are the most consequential models, because they govern what all other modelling is for. Better living often means better modelling rather than more effort; effort inside a wrong model is fuel for the wrong direction.
Manifest and Make (Chapter 15)
The generative step. Using the pieces from Map and the rules discovered through Manipulate, you synthesise something that did not exist before. This is genuine creation — not just action or wager, but bringing new things into the world from discovered components and relationships.
This step is qualitatively different from the first two. Measuring describes what is. Modelling and manipulating explains how it works. Making produces what has not yet been. The new thing is not derivable from the map or the model alone — it requires the creative act of synthesis.
A model that never returns to the world is a hobby. Every manifestation is a wager that the model is right enough to build from — and the wager pays back as new material to measure in the next turn of the loop. Without making, the loop stalls; the knowledge remains inert.
Theoretical scaffolding from the dump source
The overall.md source identifies the intellectual architecture behind Act 3. Three clusters provide the backbone.
Representational stack — Marr’s levels. David Marr’s three levels of analysis distinguish: (1) the computational problem being solved, (2) the representations and algorithms deployed, and (3) the physical implementation. For the MMM loop this means: Model is not “just matter” and not “just information.” It is a physically implemented state doing semantic work for an organism. A belief is matter with a job. This lets the book navigate the information/physical duality without collapsing it.
Active inference and embodied cognition. Active inference (Friston and colleagues) provides a contemporary bridge: perception, prediction, planning, and action are unified as a single process of minimising prediction error. The organism is always already modelling; measurement and manifestation are phases of one continuous loop, not separate operations. Ecological psychology (Gibson’s affordances) and radical embodied cognitive science (Chemero) add the complementary caution: cognition is not imprisoned inside detached representations. The organism and its environment are co-constituted. The loop does not run inside the head — it runs between organism and world.
Cybernetics and the law of requisite variety. W. Ross Ashby’s work establishes the theoretical foundation for why the loop must keep running. A controller needs enough internal variety to match the variety of what it controls. A system that cannot match its environment’s complexity will be overwhelmed by it. Lorenz’s chaos work adds the temporal dimension: deterministic systems with sensitive dependence on initial conditions hit intrinsic limits on prediction. Long-range extrapolation from a single snapshot fails structurally, not from lack of effort. Therefore: measure again, model again, act again. The loop is not a productivity heuristic — it is a structural response to bounded cognition in a chaotic-enough world.
Economics of time and governance. Gary Becker’s work on time allocation and human capital formalises what the loop looks like in economic life: time is the ultimate constrained resource, skill is embodied capital that future loops can draw on, and human capital investment is self-directed MMM across a lifetime. Oliver Williamson’s transaction cost economics explains why some manifestations produce institutions rather than open-market exchanges: when measurement of performance is hard, when commitments require asset-specific investment, and when opportunism is possible, governance structures emerge to manage the loop’s friction. Both frameworks translate the metaphysical account of MMM into practical predictions about how people organise their time, skills, and collective arrangements.
The loop as lived growth (Chapter 16)
From the inside, the loop is one motion: you notice something → the noticing rearranges what you think is going on → the rearrangement makes you do something slightly different → the slightly different thing teaches you what to notice next. Each turn is a small spiral, not a circle: you return to roughly the same point, but slightly higher, holding a slightly larger world.
Stall points:
- Stalled Measure: you stop noticing. Attention has narrowed; the inputs are the same as they were last year.
- Stalled Model: you keep noticing the same thing without updating the hypothesis. Confirmation bias, or the protective belt around a cherished theory.
- Stalled Manifest: you keep modelling without acting. Insight accumulates; nothing changes. (Therapy that plateaus is often this.)

Evolutionary “progress” is not a ladder but a branching tree of variations, each running its own MMM loop in its own register.
MMM and wisdom traditions (Chapter 20)
Contemplative traditions across cultures converge on a recognisable triad: a discipline of attention (Measure), an ontology or story (Model), and a practice or ethic that re-enters life (Manifest). The convergence is empirical — observable in the practices across very different metaphysical commitments. This does not mean all traditions are “saying the same thing”; they diverge sharply at the Model layer. But the structural shape is consistent.

Open questions
- The conditions under which the loop starts and stops are acknowledged as “partly open.” The book does not give a complete account of what kicks a stalled loop back into motion.
- The right ratio of Measure to Model to Manifest is explicitly domain-dependent; no general theory is offered.
- Why the loop runs at all — what makes matter start striving — is an inheritance from the open question in Act 1 about the origin of wanting.
- The active inference framework (Friston) treats perception and action as continuous, not as separate phases of a loop. Whether the loop is a useful model or an artifact of decomposing what is really one motion is not resolved.
